Teacher Unions Sue Education Department Over Diversity Guidance
Three major teacher unions have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education, arguing that recent guidance from the Trump administration threatens diversity in school curricula. The February 14 letter from the department suggests that many standard educational programs could be classified as illegal discrimination, according to the lawsuit. The unions claim this interpretation endangers the teaching of key historical events and violates the First and Fifth Amendments, as well as the Administrative Procedures Act. If enforced, they argue the policy will harm schools, educators, and students nationwide. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
