Teachers at many institutions around the United Kingdom will not participate in the University and College Union’s planned strike
Planned staff strikes at many colleges and universities around the United Kingdom have been called off, as a majority of institutions voted against the proposed strike action. Approximately 200 colleges and universities are represented by the University and College Union, and 140 institutions stated that they would not go on strike, and only 42 institutions voted in favor of participating in the strike action. The strike action is planned for this coming week, which is the first week of classes for most institutions around the UK. Various factors have caused teachers to oppose the strike action, with punishments such as docked salaries and some striking teachers have lost over 10,000 pounds in wages. Other institutions have offered wage bonuses and improved employee benefits such as better paternal leave, and this has lead teachers to vote against strike action.
