Teachers face pay being docked over test boycott
Public-school teachers in Victoria, Australia, and the country's Northern Territory face penalties from the Federal Government if they go through with a boycott planned in the coming months. The teachers, represented by the Australian Education Union, have threatened to boycott the upcoming round of National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy tests (NAPLAN tests) in protest of a decision by the Rudd government. The government has decided to post school information, including league tables for teachers, on their 'My School' website. The teachers' union has said that they wished Education commissioner Julia Gillard would take inspiration from the NSW territory government which outlawed public school-to-school comparisons over ten years ago. However, Gillard has instead threatened federal repercussions, potentially including at least four hours docked pay.
