Teachers in a Maine school district will not have a labor contract as school year begins
Teachers in Maine who work in Regional School Unit 21 will begin teaching this school year without a union contract. Four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school are in the district, and faculty at these schools are represented by the Kennebunk, Arundel, and Kennebunkport Educators Association. The Kennebunk, Arundel, and Kennebunkport Educators Association and Regional School Unit 21 began negotiating a new labor contract late last year but an agreement still has not been reached. The current contract for teachers is set to expire at the end of August, and teachers have stated that they do not feel secure without a new contract in place. Schools in Regional School Unit 21 pay lower salaries compared to other school districts in the area, and this has led thirty-seven staff members to resign and move to schools in other districts. Staff has also cited issues with the school board and the district superintendent as reasons for the high number of resignations.
