Teachers union convention opens, Common Core on table
The American Federation of Teachers will announce Friday a plan to offer grants to teachers to create projects to reform the controversial Common Core standards used by most states. While the AFT has supported use of Common Core, the union has been highly critical of the manner in which the standards have been implemented, and especially plans to use Common Core to evaluate teacher effectiveness. The union will offer as many as five grants of up to $30,000 to teachers.
