Teachers union, Johnson reach stalemate on plan
After a month of negotiations, the Boston Teachers Union and Superintendent Carol Johnson have come to a blockade in talks about the length of the school day. Negotiations have focused largely on changes proposed for twelve under-performing schools. Both sides have submitted proposals for changes at the twelve schools. Johnson has proposed adding an extra hour to the school day, without compensating teachers for the extra time. The teachers union support the extension of the school day but want to be compensated for the time, as our teachers at all other extended-day schools in Boston. The union has accused Johnson's team of negotiating in bad faith, refusing to make any significant changes to the proposal. Negotiations will now take place with arbitration in the form of a joint resolution committee.
