Teens take on essential worker jobs to supplement family income while balancing remote learning
As the continuing Covid-19 crisis has devastated many local economies, many high school teenagers find themselves working extra jobs as essential workers, in order to supplement decreased family income - while continuing their education via remote learning. One Chicago high school senior lost their job at their local mall as it was one of the first businesses to close, but then began working at Whole Foods eight hours a day when her mother lost her door-to-door insurance sales job. Another student has asked Chicago Public Schools for relief from the grading policy for remote learning as he has picked up two jobs totaling 50 hours because his father's work hours have decreased.
