Thailand's new labor rules send thousands of migrant workers fleeing
After Thailand’s military government announced harsher labor regulations for undocumented foreign workers, tens of thousands of migrant workers fled from the country. 60,000 workers, most of them from Myanmar, left between June 23 and June 28. According to officials from the Immigration Bureau, those numbers are continuing to rise. Thai businesses in multiple industries have already been hit because they depend on these migrant workers for manual labor and jobs that Thai citizens are not willing to do. For this reason, a labor shortage would leave many businesses with no way to continue work. The Thai government has since implemented a 120-day delay in implementing the labor regulations, but workers have continued to leave for their home countries.
