The Biden Administration's new measure to increase wages for federal construction projects will benefit unions
The Biden Administration announced a new measure that will increase pay standards for federally funded projects. Federal construction projects will pay employees the same wages that 30% or more of other workers in the trade and industry earn. The measure will support union requirements and allocate a greater share of federal investments from these projects to unionized workers. This measure comes as the federal government is increasing projects focused on clean energy, semiconductor, and infrastructure, and various unions have expressed concerns over who these projects benefit the most. Previous measures seemed to disproportionately benefit red states in the south that have fewer unionized workers, as well as various private construction firms.
