The implications of minor league baseball joining the MLB union
Last weekend, the MLB voluntarily recognized the unionization of minor league players and designation of the Major League Baseball Players Association as their bargaining representative. In doing so, the MLB also avoided congressional interventions regarding its anti-trust exemption. Once the union authorization cards are validated by an arbitrator, which is expected to occur on Wednesday, the minor league players will officially become a subunit of the MLBPA, and collective bargaining agreement negotiations will begin in the off season. The main goal of these contract negotiations for minor leaguers will be winning salary raises. However, there are some fears that by raising salaries in the minor league, owners will reduce their rosters and employ fewer minor league players.
