The Minnesota Orchestra?s Labor Dispute Is Over. What?s Next?
After being locked out for 488 days, the Minnesota Orchestra musicians will return to work on February 1. Although the Orchestra management has originally proposed a 35% wage and benefit concession from the musicians amounting, the final agreement included only a 10% cut to wages and about a 5% increase to the amount the musicians will pay in benefits. The voting process took over 5 hours because of the extreme dispersion of the musicians. After 15 months, many of them had to take on other jobs far from home to make ends meet. Now there is a flurry of activity setting up the remaining concerts and selling subscriptions and tickets for a season that might not have been.
