The U.S. and Mexico agree on a GM plant union vote
After finding irregularities in a union ratification vote at General Motor’s Silao Mexico plant, the U.S. and Mexico have come to an agreement to hold a new vote by August 20th. This agreement also follows a complaint from the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) asking Mexico to review the labor practices at the GM plant. A joint statement was released detailing that workers will be able to vote on the bargaining agreement in “free and democratic conditions.” Failure for this fair vote to occur by August 20th will terminate the contract and could impose a remedy on the plant by revoking their tariff-free access to vehicle imports.
