This Republican bill would let your employer demand access to your genetic information
A bill that would allow employers to force employees to disclose medical records and genetic information is making its way through Congress. The “Preserving Employee Wellness Programs Act" passed through one House committee last week and is being backed primarily by Republicans. The highly controversial bill uses company "wellness programs" to circumvent the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. According to the Affordable Care Act, HIPAA, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, companies are legally allowed to discriminate between employees who opt to join wellness programs and those who do not. Although wellness programs must be voluntary, the EEOC loosened the definition of "voluntary" last year.
