Thousands of city workers in Los Angeles plan to strike this week
City workers in Los Angeles are planning to walk out on Tuesday for 24 hours, and they will join other LA workers on strike. Hotel employees, SAG-AFTRA actors, and WGA movie and television writers have been on strike throughout this summer to protest for greater wages and better worker rights. Over 11,000 workers represented by the Service Employees International Union are set to strike on Tuesday. A majority of municipal services in Los Angeles will be affected, as sanitation workers and street service employees are major groups planning to strike. The union has stated that the city of Los Angeles has participated in bad-faith bargaining, and has failed to meet the needs of workers. Workers are demanding new measures to address problems with workers’ resources and chronic staff vacancies.
