Timber industry main backer for initiative that would lessen union power
A ballot initiative in Oregon that has little if anything to do with the timber industry is receiving a lot in donations from some executives of top lumber companies. Freedom of Association is the reason, as stated by one of the donors, for the significant contribution to a bill that would add right-to-work circumstance to all employment with Oregon state. The bill would allow public employees in the state to remain gainfully employed within a union environment while not paying any dues. Opponents of the ballot measure say that any right-to-work law is meant to undermine the ability of unions to operate. The current Oregon Governor, John Kitzhaber, has said that he opposes the ballot, so it has little chance of becoming law, but its existence is significant because it is drawing large donations in such a liberal state.
