To Ask, And Not Receive: AFSCME's Long Battle For Overdue Pay
Illinois public employees are being denied overdue pay dating as far back as 2011, and the state is ignoring the AFSCME’s demands to compensate their members. Some 38,000 workers are represented by the union. Members rallied at the Statehouse on April 26th, demanding the money promised in their contracts. The battle is over pay-raises that were included in the public employees’ contracts but never paid out. Former Illinois Governor said that state lawmakers failed to include the raises in the budget. In 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the AFSCME, and the employees were compensated half of the money initially promised in their contracts. They have yet to receive the rest, and workers are increasingly the pressure on the administration to pay-out.
