Toronto reaches deal with outdoor workers union
A tentative deal has been reached between the city of Toronto, Canada, and the Canada Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 416, representing 6,200 outdoor city workers. CUPE Local 416 began a strike 35 days ago over several contract issues, including sick leave policies, which left 500,000 households without garbage service. Temporary dumps were set up by the city for the past month, but street bins were nevertheless overflowing. As union members have not yet voted on the new deal, no contract details were given but CUPE president Mark Ferguson, says that it is both a compromise and a deal that the union can be proud of. If the deal is approved, employees could return to work by Thursday. Another Toronto strike, by city day-care and building permit workers, continues without any new progress.
