Toughen anti-slavery laws, say UK lawmakers after fashion probe
UK lawmakers are taking a more stringent approach to tackle the issue of slavery, worker abuse, and child labor in the fashion industry. In 2015, Britain was recognized as a global leader after passing the Modern Slavery Act. However, with fast fashion on the rise and constant high demand from consumers, critics argue that the law is not being utilized effectively to tackle the issue. In an effort to regroup, the government has already distributed over 17,000 letters to businesses reminding them to provide statements on how they will be tackling modern slavery. According to the United Nations, about 25 million people are estimated to be trapped in forced labor.
