Toyota Motor Workers in Ontario Put Union Vote on Hold
The vote to attempt to certify the first union in a Toyota facility in North America has been put on hold as the organizing union, Unifor, announced that it had overestimated the worker support for the union. In filings with the labor board in Canada, Toyota estimated that 7,500 workers were eligible to vote on union certification, but Unifor had only estimated 6,590 eligible employees. The discrepancy could be due to new hires or differing definitions of who would be encompassed in the bargaining unit. The union president, Mr. Dias, has said that the vote would be rescheduled for the ?near future?. Workers who supported the union in the plants have said that more than 3,000 employees have signed cards supporting organizing by Unifor.
