Toyota to close union plant in California
Toyota announced Thursday that it would close its plant known as Nummi in Fremont, California. The plant is the only unionized Toyota facility in the U.S., and was originally part of a joint venture with General Motors, Inc. After its bankruptcy, GM chose to abandon the Fremont plant, leaving it in Toyota's hands. Toyota says they regret the action, but the plant is becoming economically non-viable. The plant makes Toyota's Corolla and Tacoma models - Corolla's will now be imported and Tacoma's made at an underused plant in Texas. UAW president Ron Gettelfinger has criticized Toyota's decision, pointing out that the Corolla was one of the most popular cash-for-clunkers cars. California lawmakers oppose the closure as well, fearing the state could lose up to 40,000 jobs. A rally is planned for Saturday in San Francisco.
