Transit union blamed for Muni cuts
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has criticized the the Transport Workers Union, which represents Muni operators, for not agreeing to cuts. The Mayor is trying to close a $483 million budget deficit, and says that he has reached agreements with all unions except the Transport Workers. The Municipal Agency cut services by 10%, which has led to fewer buses and longer waits for passengers. The Board of Supervisors says that they will not accept the budget unless the cut is reduced to 5%. Newsom has blamed the Transport Workers' failure to cooperate as the reason for the issues with the budget. He says that he will continue to work to get the union to agree to $14 million in concessions, a deal that was rejected by union members. The union responded that the problems with the budget went deeper than pay cuts, and that something else needed to be done.
