Transit Union Campaigns Against Computer-Run Trains
Members of the Transport Workers Union of America, Local 100 have began mobilizing New York City transit riders against a plan to replace train conductors with a computer-controlled subway system. Union representatives argue that conductors are essential to ensuring transit safety. A spokesman for New York City Transit said that their plan to phase in computerized operation of the trains was based on careful study and an extensive safety certification plan.
