Transportation workers in England vote to authorize strike action for the next six months
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers represented over 20,000 transportation workers in England. These workers work at 14 different companies that have contracts with the Department of Transport, and unionized workers voted overwhelmingly to approve future strike action. The vote authorized strike action for the next six months, as the union and the Department of Transport continue to negotiate a new contract. The Department of Transport proposed a 9% wage increase spread out over the next two years, but the union rejected this offer. The Department of Transport stated that it will not offer a higher increase, and is urging the union to put the proposal on a full ballot and let unionized workers vote.
