Trial Starts in '94 Suit Alleging CHP Bias
A class-action lawsuit brought against the California Highway Patrol (CHP) by a black lieutenant claiming that he and other nonwhite officers were denied promotion opportunities because of their race is finally going to court. The plaintiff's lawyer attempted to show a pattern of discrimination in the promotion of minority officers by using a statistical analysis of positions held by officers. In addition to financial compensation, the plaintiffs are seeking an injunction that would require the CHP to establish percentage targets for the promotion of minority officers and mandate diversity training for managers.
