Trump may not get the 'win' he seeks in NAFTA talks
Officials from the US, Canada, and Mexico will begin to renegotiate the terms of NAFTA today as President Trump looks to secure a ‘win’ for his administration. On the campaign trail, he repeatedly called NAFTA the worst trade deal in history, promising to get an agreement that would be better for workers or withdraw from the deal altogether. Experts, however, fail to see any positive outcome for Trump. He may get frustrated during negotiations and withdraw from the pact, which would endanger 14 million American jobs, or he may manage to negotiate favorable terms only to have it struck down in Congress. While Democrats and Republicans alike have disparaged the effects of NAFTA on the American economy, the provisions they want to see changed are very different. For the deal to be passed in Congress, Trump would need to walk the line between angering Republicans and making concessions to Democrats carefully.
