Trump Wants To Rewrite Obama’s Overtime Reforms
The White House filed a brief declining to move forward with overtime reforms put in place by the Obama administration. Instead, the Trump administration will come up with its own plan to modify overtime rules. The Obama reforms would have entitled salaried workers to overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours a week, and raised the salary threshold more than $20,000. However, after businesses groups sued over the rules and were granted a stay from a federal judge, it was unclear what would happen with the reforms. The Trump administration has conceded that it supported increasing the salary threshold to protect salaried workers, meaning it is likely to do the same. During his confirmation hearing in March, labor secretary Alexander Acosta estimated that an updated salary threshold adjusted for inflation would be around $33,000. This would cover less workers than Obama’s proposed threshold, but would still extend protections to more workers than in the status quo.
