U.A.W. Chief Is Taking On Toyota Plants
Looking to take advantage of Toyota's much publicized safety problems and recalls, the United Auto Workers union is doubling its efforts to organize workers in the car manufacturer's ten American factories. New UAW chief Bob King is urging union members to picket Toyota dealerships across the country, and vowed to "pound on Toyota" to organize workers and gain influence at the Japanese auto giant for the first time in the over 20 years Toyota has been manufacturing in the United States. Labor experts state that organizing at Toyota may be more of an uphill battle than ever, given the relative security Toyota employees enjoy compared to those at the American car companies, which have suffered years of closures and layoffs.
