U.S. Senate confirms former Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as labor secretary
Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a former Republican congresswoman from Oregon, has been confirmed as U.S. labor secretary in a 67-32 Senate vote, with support from both parties. Her ties to labor unions, despite her party affiliation, played a role in her nomination, though some Republicans opposed her over past support for the PRO Act. Chavez-DeRemer assured senators she respects state right-to-work laws and pledged to prioritize American workers. While Oregon’s Democratic senators voted against her, several Democrats from swing states backed her confirmation. She becomes the first Oregonian in a presidential cabinet since the Reagan administration.
