UAW is looking to unionize workers at other automakers in the United States
United Auto Workers union successfully negotiated new contracts with General Motors, Stellanis, and Ford earlier this year, and won major pay increases and improvements in employee benefits for workers at the Big 3 Automakers. The UAW is using the momentum that it gained from these contract wins to increase unionization efforts at other automotive companies in the United States. Other automakers in the United States have historically remained non-unionized, such as Toyota, Honda, and Tesla. A majority of these automakers have factories located in southern states, a region that has historically remained non-unionized. State laws in the South make it more difficult for workers to unionize, and the politics and culture in the South are largely anti-union. On the UAW website, automotive workers at thirteen different automotive companies can sign union authorization cards. Many of these automakers have raised wages in recent weeks in attempts to stay competitive with the new wages in the contracts between the UAW and the Big 3 Automakers.
