UAW steps up bid to organize VW U.S. plant
In an effort to boost its shrinking membership and coffers, the United Auto Workers have intensified their push to organize U.S. workers at plants owned by foreign automakers, beginning with Volkswagen AG?s Chattanooga plant. The union has begun distributing authorization cars to workers earlier this month to begin the organizing process, and has held informal meetings with some workers at the plant. While Volkswagen officials have declared the decision to organize is up to the workers themselves and that the company would not interfere with the process, many employees wonder if it is necessary for them to unionize at all.
