UAW?s king wants to import German labor model to US
In an effort to broaden union presence in the south, UAW President Bob King extended the possibility of implementing a German-style labor model. King cited features of the German system such as codetermination, a works council, and supervisory board that make it a more collaborative style of labor relations. Although few foreign-owned assembly plants in the United States currently operate under a UAW contract, King anticipates that the model will appeal to companies such as Nissan. With one year left in his position, the UAW president expressed hope that these plants would help the UAW restore its declining membership.
