Uber Sued Again Over ‘Wage Theft’ in New York
Uber is being sued by both individual drivers and a New York City taxi drivers union who allege the company participates in wage theft. The union is arguing that the wage theft stems from Uber’s specific pay practices, which create conditions where drivers who work long hours sometimes do not receive overtime pay that meets the minimum wage. The plaintiffs split their complaints into two separate lawsuits in order to avoid being compelled to engage in arbitration instead of going to court. This second allegation of wage theft adds to the already questionable status of Uber drivers as either employees or independent contractors.
