Uber Sued by Drivers Alleging Race-Biased Ratings Lead to Firings
A former Uber driver, Thomas Liu, has filed a complaint with the San Francisco federal court on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of non-White drivers. The complaints alleges that Uber is aware that passengers are known to discriminate in their rating of drivers, and Uber's continual usage of passenger ratings as the primary reason for employment termination constitutes intentional race discrimination. The lawsuit is the latest volley in a high-stakes struggle over whether ride-hail companies can keep classifying drivers as contractors, who are excluded from legal protections covering minimum wage, unionization, and harassment as well as discrimination.
