UC employees to stage 5-day strike in early March
The University of California may see 21,000 employees go on strike in March if an impasse is not broken in negotiations with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees union. An additional 13,000 employees working at the five University of California medical centers may strike in sympathy. Both unions have already voted in favor of striking in March. This strike is the third since negotiations began, the first was for one day in last May. Although both parties agree on most of the issues, wages and staffing levels are still contentious topics. UC wages are so low that union leaders say that about 99% of the workers they represent are eligible for some public assistance that is dependent on wages.
