UK unemployment falls to lowest since Jan 2009, wage growth weak
As more people found work in Britain, the country?s unemployment level in April plunged to its lowest level since January 2009. Unlike the U.S.?s recent drops in unemployment, the U.K. drop in the number of people unemployed was almost entirely due to job seekers becoming employed at companies. Although the unemployment rate fell to 6.6%, average wages continued to stagnate. Wages were flat in April, but over the first quarter of 2014, wages outpaced inflation. The mix of positive and negative data has led economists to disagree over whether the country is generally heading in a better or worse direction with regard to the labor market and the economy.
