UN urges labor reform in Qatar
With 88% of the Qatar?s population made up of migrant workers, it was only a matter of time before the effectiveness of the ?kafala? system was questioned. The 2022 FIFA World Cup sped the process along with a series of investigations and investigative journalism calling attention to the harsh conditions that employers are able to force migrant workers into under the ?kafala? system. The U.N. Special Reporter on Human Rights of Migrants, Francois Crepeau, has officially called for the system to be abolished along with 14 other recommendations. Mr. Crepeau described violations ranging from detainment without trial to child labor violations, from unacceptable living conditions to jailing women who have children out of wedlock. Mr. Crepeau did recognize that the country?s government were very open, allowing him to see any site he wished. Qatari officials continue to pledge to work to improve condition of migrant workers.
