Under Pressure, Tronc Recognizes 'Chicago Tribune' Union
Tronc Media, the parent company of both the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune, among other news outlets, agreed on Sunday that they will recognize the Tribune’s recently elected labor union. The corporation has historically been strongly against unions and initially refused to recognize the Newspaper Guild after they were elected by journalists last week by an 85% margin. Organizers have expressed concern about noncompetitive pay, uneven compensation between women and employees of color compared to their white and male counterparts, as well as a lack of journalistic freedom.
