Unemployment benefit applications jump to 399,000
As companies let seasonal workers go after the holidays, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits increased. The Labor Department says that applications increased by 24,000 in the last week. The increase was after three months of declining applications. The unemployment rate in December fell to a three-year low of 8.5%.
