Unfair labor practices alleged against San Francisco transit drivers union
The city of San Francisco has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the municipal transit workers union after the third straight day of the employees calling in sick en masse. The city?s attorney Dennis Herrera claims that in addition to forbidding municipal workers from striking, San Francisco statute also forbids city workers from engaging in work stoppages, of which a sickout is one form. The union has stated again that it has had no involvement in initiating nor encouraging the sickout and that it has asked its members who call out sick to have a doctor?s note explaining the absence. The contract that the union members rejected on Friday would have meant a potential pay cut since the 11% raise split over two years would be less than the 7.5% increase in pension costs to be shouldered by the union.
