Unifor, Ford divided as strike deadline looms
According to Unifor, Canada’s largest auto workers’ union, it is still far apart from Ford in its contract negotiations. The strike deadline is tonight at midnight, and failure to reach an agreement could result in over 6,000 Ford employees striking. The main areas of contention are plant investments and salaries for new hires. Unifor represents 20,000 auto workers across Ford, GM, and Fiat Chrysler and uses pattern bargaining to base its contract negotiations. Unifor has already reached deals with GM and Fiat Chrysler that included new investments in Canadian plants.
