Union Authorizes Strike in Dispute with Stop & Shop
On Saturday, the contract for Stop & Shop employees expired. As a result, employees represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers unanimously voted to authorize a strike if a new contract is not reached soon. Reportedly, the company is trying to reduce benefits, increase healthcare costs and cut pensions. The union claims that the company's current wages are not even adequate. If United Food and Commercial Workers' members decide to go on strike, as many as 10,000 Stop & Shop employees could participate.
