Union election at Foxwoods as CT tribes push back against federal labor laws
The NLRB will hold an election on Friday for more than 300 custodial employees at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The unionization election comes in the wake of the Senate’s decision to block the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act earlier this week. The bill would have exempted native businesses from federal labor standards provided by the NLRA and FLSA. After a nearly year-long campaign led by organizers from Unite Here’s Boston-based regional New England offices, janitors and other cleaning staff at Foxwoods will finally get to decide whether they want to be represented by the union. Other employees at the casino including dealers, bartenders, and beverage servers are already unionized, and there is speculation that the custodial staff will soon join them after Friday’s election.
