Union files to organize Delta baggage handlers
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is making a bid to unionize baggage handlers, flight simulator technicians, and security workers at Delta Airlines. The IAMAW represents 5,000 such workers at pre-merger Northwest Airlines, and contends that since the two airlines now operate as one employer that a union vote should take place at Delta. The union feels that "any benefits from the merger...must be shared with employees." If the National Mediation Board recognizes Delta and Northwest officially as one employer, a union vote will be forced. IAMAW also represents counter and clerical staff at Northwest, and says they will soon push to unionize these workers at Delta as well.
