Union Intensifies Efforts to Organize Workers at Wal-Mart
The United Food and Commercial Workers union is working harder than ever to organize Wal-Mart workers, hoping for help from the Employee Free Choice Act. Wal-Mart says its managers have reported an increase in union activity as a result of UFCW efforts. The union is seeking employee signatures on union-authorization cards ? which could be enough to secure unionization if the pending legislation passes. The UFCW has sent organizers to over 100 Wal-Mart stores, is distributing literature, and is even flying Wal-Mart employees in favor of the union to Washington in order to lobby for the Employee Free Choice Act. Wal-Mart is fighting the effort through meetings, fliers and videos designed to discourage employees from joining unions.
