Union issue, South Florida Democrats' ambitions in SunRail spotlight
A proposal in the Florida State government would build a new SunRail, and provide financial help to Tri-Rail, a South Florida railway. The future of the proposal is in jeopardy because of the AFL-CIO's opposition to the deal because the jobs would be non-union. The AFL-CIO and other labor groups want language added to the bill that ensures that jobs on both Tri-Rail and SunRail lines will be union jobs. Senate Democrats are supportive of a deal favoring the unions because a number of them are running for national office and need the union's support.
