Union local threatens strike against supermarket
As strife continues over contract talks for Stop & Shop groceries and the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), the union resorts to drastic action. With no end to talks in sight, Local 371 of the UFCW, representing about 12,000 employees in the state of Connecticut, issued an ultimatum to Stop & Shop yesterday. The union has said that the latest proposal from management is unacceptable, and if a new one has not been offered by 3pm today, the union will terminate the current contract of their own volition, and walk off the job. It is unclear whether this ultimatum extends to the other 28,000 UFCW Stop & Shop employees in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A spokesperson for Stop & Shop says the company will continue to negotiate but does not anticipate problems finding temporary workers if a strike does indeed take place.
