Union told Nummi's fortune uncertain after October
A Nummi automobile factory in Fremont, California (the only such plant west of the Mississippi) faces tough times once again, after it rebounded from a previous shutdown in 1982, re-opening in 1984. Chief Executive Kunihiko Ogura told his employees Friday that current orders will keep the plant running through October, but after that it all seems up in the air. Union members from the UAW 2244 met Sunday at the Fremont plant to discuss the situation and many, including employees who survived the first shutdown, have emerged with a hopeful outlook. "We're a very resourceful plant, and we're going to do everything we can," said one union member. Others admit to being scared for the future. Local 2244 president Sergio Santos says a lot depends on pending tax incentive legislation which might encourage Toyota to take over the plant after GM drops it.
