Union Wants Cities to Dunk Mexican-Made Oreos
The Bakers union representing the Bakery, Confectionary, and Tobacco Workers have asked 13 U.S. city councils to approve a “No Buy Nabisco” resolution that would bar the cities from buying the brand’s products with government money. The “No Buy Nabisco” rule would affect city-funded operations like public schools and correctional facilities. The legislation is intended to protest parent company Mondelez International’s outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs to Mexico. In 2015, 600 oreo-making positions in Chicago were transferred to Mexico. Michelle Wu of the Boston City Council said that no formal resolution for “No Buy Nabisco” was submitted yet.
