Unionized workers in the Czech Republic participated in strike action in Prague
Thousands of workers in the Czech Republic who are a part of labor unions went on strike early this week to protest various government cuts. These government cuts were made in an attempt to control the government deficit, but the changes will alter the pension system and funding for education and healthcare. The government also introduced a new measure to increase taxes, in an additional effort to offset the government deficit. The taxes that will be increased are alcohol taxes, medicine taxes, and business corporate taxes. The strike took place in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and protested near the country’s parliament. Almost 75 percent of educational institutions in the country were closed due to the protests, and several universities also expressed support for the strike.
