Unions agree on path for immigration reform
The AFL-CIO and Change to Win federation have joined forces to push legislation, announcing a framework for immigration reform. Labor unions, who have been previously divided on immigration reform, hope cohesion will aid success on the issue this time. The proposal supports the legalization of undocumented immigrants in the U.S., as well as research into labor market demands and shortages, but opposes guest worker programs. Research and analysis would be conducted by an independent commission, which business leaders have already suspected would be ?politicized?. Businesses typically prefer guest worker programs that allow them to fill labor demands with temporary workers. The Obama administration is expected to pursue immigration reform, but opposition from business will make passing legislation much more difficult ? particularly within the current economic environment.
